Chapter 13

The next morning Bray walked into the American Airlines Center expecting to see the rest of his teammates, coaches, and trainers out on the floor. Instead, he saw Kelly Patterson. She was dressed in tight jeans and a tighter blouse that left nothing to his imagination. She wore too much makeup and her hair was perfect.

She walked toward him with an exaggerated swagger in some high-heeled shoes that made his hips hurt. He shook his head as one of the trainers took his bag from his hands.

“Coach is in his office. He wants to talk to you before practice.” The young man walked away.

“Brayden, you haven’t returned any of my calls,” she whined in that voice he’d once thought sexy. Now it sounded like nails on a chalkboard. “You weren’t at the club last night, either. I saw some of the other guys from the team there. Where were you? I’ve even been by the condo, but you’re never there.”

“Hey, Kelly. I don’t have much time. I haven’t called you in a few months. Why are you showing up now?” He knew, but didn’t really care. Kelly made her way around the professional athlete circuit, and it looked like she was back at the top of the list. The reason she hadn’t been in touch with him was because she’d been dating a football player. The affair must have fizzled, and now she was back.

“I wanted you to call me. I wanted you to miss me.”

He knew that was a lie. “I guess you’ll be waiting a long time for that call.”

“You don’t think I look good?”

He looked her up and down. Kelly couldn’t look bad if she tried. “I didn’t say that. You always look good. But I’m not interested in you anymore.”

She actually looked surprised. “Men would kill to be in your position.”

“I don’t doubt it for one minute,” Bray said honestly. “I found someone else and am no longer on the market. So go find another playmate.”

She stood with her hands on her narrow hips, tapping her stiletto-clad feet. “You can’t do this to me!”

“Look, Kelly, I have practice now. Either leave or I’ll call security.”

She thought about her options and headed for the exit. “You haven’t seen the last of me, Brayden Allen.”

Brayden ignored her threat and walked into the dressing room. Man, what was he thinking getting involved with her? He knew exactly what he was thinking with, and it had landed him in an empty affair with an empty-headed woman who treated their dates like a business transaction.

“Allen, glad you could join us!” Coach called as he entered the dressing room. The rest of his teammates were seated. “Now that Cinderella is here, we can do this.”

He hated being on the receiving end of Coach’s comments. But Greg DeMorris won championships, and that was the name of the game. “Sorry, Coach.”

Coach waved off his remark and pointed to the vacant seat. “Sit by your girlfriend.”

Brayden stiffened at the remark. Everyone knew Tyler wasn’t gay, and neither was he.
